Use a Google account — a @gmail.com or Google-linked address, the same one signed in to the Play Store on your phone. Other emails (Yahoo, Outlook, iCloud) can join the group but won't be able to install from Google Play.
Join the group first, then tap Get it on Google Play and choose Become a tester. (Access can take a few minutes to activate after you join.)
